The utterances of popes, by virtue of their position as Vicar of Christ on Earth, are never received by the world as "personal opinion". You may feel this is unfair - you may feel this is the fault of the listener - but it is the reality.
The man who is pope may certainly possess private opinions, but he should know enough to keep those to himself because of the damage and confusion his offhanded comments can cause. If he lacks the self-discipline to do so, maybe he is mis-placed in the office he holds.
