Recently, my wife and I visited with our dear friend Fr. Joe, who was the spiritual advisor to our pilgrimage group in Medjugorje. Fr. Joe told us a story concerning the Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet, Bishop Kaffer, who recently passed away.
According to Fr. Joe, Bishop Kaffer was very skeptical of Medjugorje, particularly in regard to the number of apparitions experienced by Medjugorje visionaries since 1981.
One day, Fr. Joe learned that the Bishop had made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje during the 25th anniversary. When asked about why he went to Medjugorje when he had so many doubts, the Bishop responded that one day, it occurred to him that Our Savior is present in each and every Host at each and every Mass and has been for the last 2000 years. He went on to say that if we as Catholics truly believe that, then it should not be at all difficult to accept that His Mother would present Herself to the visionaries for as many times and as long as She has.
