Are Pretzels considered bread?

Quick question, are pretzels considered bread and would they satisfy the 'bread and water' requirement? They are really hardened bread and I tend to think so. Thank you!

Good question! Seems like they would be, provided they aren't TOO tasty! (Grin)

The thing is, though, they might have a lot of salt. Which may not be good.

Although it's been reported that Our Blessed Mother says bread is the best fast, in part because it is "the food of the poor," the underlying motivation for us should probably be to give up that which we enjoy. To detach ourselves and give a gift to God, among other intentions.

Your mileage may vary!

I tend to agree pretzels are just dough, so I don't see why they can't be included under bread. I also eat croutons when I need something crunchy. I hate bread. It is not something I eat except if I have a sandwich which is very rare. Most people I think like bread and fill up on it at meals. I have to find ways to eat it otherwise I stick with water all day and I get so tired I have to go to bed.

I’ve experimented with pretzels before during my fasts. Overall, they made me feel worst (too much sodium).

When I switched from low-quality bread sources (enriched flour, pretzels, etc.) towards high-quality bread sources (homemade, whole grain wheat bread, etc.) the fasts became more manageable.

I was fuller, felt healthier, and happier. However, my taste buds were not always satisfied, yet that’s part of the fast.

Dear All,

I too find fasting on bread and water very hard!!! I have given up meat on those days as my fast because I am a BIG meat eater coming from Texas. I do eat pretzels at work because they are available. I am glad to read that others are doing so also. Now I have another sources of crunch!! Croutons are a great idea. I will try them and let you know how it goes. Thanks

Respectfully
In Christ,
