Starting December 8th, passages from Scripture regarding the Name of the Lord will be posted starting from the beginning...

1. Genesis 4: 25-26
Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she called Seth. "God has granted me more offspring in place of Abel," she said, "because Cain slew him." To Seth, in turn a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to invoke the Lord by Name.

2. Genesis 12:7-8 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So Abram built an altar there to the Lord Who had appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel, pitching his tent with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. He built an altar there to the Lord and invoked the Lord by Name.

3. Genesis 13:2-4 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold. From the Negeb he traveled by stages toward Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly stood, the site where he had first built the altar; and there he invoked the Lord by Name.

5. Genesis 26:23-25 From there Isaac went up to Beersheba. The same night the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. You have no need to fear, since I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham." So he built an altar there and invoked the Lord by Name.

6. The call of Moses at the burning bush Exodus 3:4-15 When the Lord saw him coming over to look at it more closely, God called out to him from the bush, "Moses! Moses!" He answered, "Here I am." God said, "Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. I am the God of your father," He continued, "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob." Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. But the Lord said, "I have witnessed the affliction of My people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, so I know well what they are suffering. Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the country of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. So indeed the cry of the Israelites has reached Me, and I have truly noted that the Egyptians are oppressing them. Come, now! I will send you to Pharaoh to lead My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt."
But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt?" He answered, "I will be with you; and this shall be your proof that it is I who have sent you: when you bring My people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this very mountain." "But," said Moses to God, "when I go to the Israelites and say them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' if they ask me, 'What is the His Name?' what am I to tell them?" God replied, "I am who am." Then He added, "This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you."
God spoke further to Moses, "Thus shall you say to the Israelites: The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.
"This is My Name forever; this is My title for all generations."

7. Exodus 5:22 to 6:5 Moses again had recourse to the Lord and said, "Lord, why do you treat this people so badly? And why did you send me on such a mission? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your Name, he has maltreated this people of Yours, and You have done nothing to rescue them."
Then the Lord answered Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh. Forced by My mighty hand, he will send them away; compelled by My outstretched hand, he will drive them from his land."
God also said to Moses, "I am the Lord. As God the Almighty I appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but My Name, Lord, I did not make known to them. I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they were living as aliens. And now that I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are treating as slaves, I am mindful of My covenant."

8. Exodus 9:13-16 Seventh Plague: the Hail. Then the Lord told Moses, "Early tomorrow morning present yourself to Pharaoh and say to him: Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go to worship Me, or this time I will hurl all My blows upon you and your servants and your subjects, that you may know that there is none like Me anywhere on earth. For by now I would have stretched out My hand and struck you and your subjects with such pestilence as would wipe you from the earth. But this why I have spared you: to show you My power and to make My Name resound throughout the earth!"

9. Exodus 15:1-3 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD. I will sing to the LORD, for He is gloriously triumphant, horse and chariot He has cast into the sea. My strength and my courage is the LORD and He has been my Savior. He is my God, I praise Him; the God of my father, I extol Him. The LORD is a warrior, LORD is His Name!

11. Exodus 20:24 (The LORD told Moses) "An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and upon it you shall sacrifice your holocausts and peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In whatever place I choose for the remembrance of My Name I will come to you and bless you."

12. Exodus 33:17-19 The LORD said to Moses, "This request, too, which you have just made (that the LORD accompany them to the promised land), I will carry out, because you have found favor with Me and you are My intimate friend."
Then Moses said, "Do not let me see your glory!"
He answered, "I will make all My beauty pass before you, and in your presence I will pronounce My Name, 'LORD'; I will show favors to whom I will, I who grant mercy to whom I will."

13. Exodus 34:4-5 Moses then cut two stone tablets like the former, and early the next morning he went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, taking along the two stone tablets.
Having come down in a cloud, the LORD stood with him there and proclaimed His Name, "LORD." Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out, "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing His kindness for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for their fathers' wickedness!"

14. Now we head into the Book of Leviticus which is made up in great part of sacrificial and ritual laws prescribed for the priests of the tribe of Levi. Leviticus 18:21 You shall not offer any of your offspring to be immolated to molech (Canaanite false god associated with child sacrifice), thus profaning the Name of your God. I am the LORD.

16. Leviticus 20:2-3 "Tell the Israelites: Anyone, whether an Israelite or an alien residing in Israel, who gives any of his offspring to molech shall be put to death. Let his fellow citizens stone him. I Myself will turn against such a man and cut him off from the body of his people; for in giving his offspring to molech, he has defiled My sanctuary and profaned My holy Name."

19. Leviticus 22:31-32 "Be careful to observe the commandments which I, the LORD, give you, and do not profane My holy Name; in the midst of the Israelites I, the LORD, must be held as sacred. It is I who made you sacred and led you out of the land of Egypt, that I, the LORD, might be your God."

20. Leviticus 24:10-16 Punishment of Blasphemy Among the Israelites there was a man born of an Israelite mother (Shelomith, daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan) and an Egyptian father. This man quarreled publicly with another Israelite and cursed and blasphemed the LORD's Name. So the people brought him to Moses, who kept him in custody till a decision from the LORD should settle the case for them. The LORD then said to Moses, "Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and when all who have heard him have laid their hands on his head, let the whole community stone him. Tell the Israelites: Anyone who curses his Go shall bear the penalty of his sin; whoever blasphemes the Name of the LORD shall be put to death. The whole community shall stone him; alien and native alike must be put to death for blaspheming the LORD's Name."

The book of Numbers is about the censuses of the Hebrews. There is one reference to the Name of the LORD and it is a renown Priestly blessing. 21. Numbers 6:24-27 The LORD said to Moses: "Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them: This is how you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! So shall they invoke My Name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them."

The Book of Deuteronomy completes the Pentateuch and it was written to summarize the important things the Lord told to Moses before the Israelites crossed the River Jordan into the Promised land. 22. Deuteronomy 5:11 'You shall not take the Name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes His Name in vain.'

23. Deuteronomy 6:10-15 When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that He would give you, a land with fine, large cities that you did not build, with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant; and when, therefore, you eat your fill, take care not to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. The LORD, your God, shall you fear; Him shall you serve, and by His Name shall you swear. You shall not follow other gods, such as those of the surrounding nations, lest the wrath of the LORD, your God, flare up against you and He destroy you from the face of the land; for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a jealous God.
