Someone just back from Medjugorje was told that the Oasis of Peace is going to close. This is as yet not confirmed and I know no other details.

I hate to sound really stupid, but it beats the alternative of remaining ignorant. What exactly is the Oasis of Peace? Is it a place or an "organization". Do any of the visionaries speak there?

I googled a bit and this is the same place that Bishop Peric said was holding Adoration and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament without permission of the diocese.

If it's being closed, this is not good news.
God bless you!

Maybe the Forum members could club together and purchase the property. It’s in a great location and you can sneak through the hedge to get to Marija’s house next door!

It isn’t too long since the community was raising funds for building work on the property.

I know that there is an Oasis of Peace Community house in Rome, so don’t be surprised if the Italians step in!

You can find details about the Community at

What would we do with it Bluecross, once we have found sufficient convertible marks. Retreat centre? Pansion? It would have to be something that would get past the B-----p.

I'm sure there's many Romeos on the forum who'd love to sneak through the bushes to visit Marija. I suppose in the interests of peace, we'd have to cut down the amount of laughter etc.
We could cook the Bishop some lovely meals and thereby bribe him to keep the place open.
Cheers
Leo.

Ref. the question, 'what exactly is the Oasis of Peace', yes, it does appear to be a 'community' - from a blog account of a visit to Medjugorje in 1999:

'The Oasis of Peace is an incredible community which prides {perhaps not the best choice of word, IMHO] itself on living a prayerful and simple life centered on Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.'

Peace and Love.

One would think that anything which encourages a prayerful and simple life, as Christ did by word and example, would be supported by every true person of faith. Jesus told us that there would be many wolves in sheep's clothing, and His prophecy is coming true.

If the organiztion needs money. I'd be happy to donate if I knew who or where to send the funds.

Andy, it’s interesting that you should bump this thread to the top of the list today because this morning I received a book in the post which has a section devoted to the origins of the Oasis of Peace Community and one of its founders Fr Gianni Sgreva.

One piece of information particularly caught my eye. It was when Fr Gianni, still in the process of forming the community, met with Cardinal Ratzinger.

Here is what he is quoted as saying:

On September 9th (1986), Cardinal Ratzinger granted me an audience. I submitted to him two problems enroute to a solution: a community of men and women, celibate or married, founded on these apparitions (Medjugorje). The Cardinal looked at me joyfully and said with a smile:

“Why are you worried about it. Medjugorje – I’ll take care of it. With respect to you, keep very well in mind a very important principle. It is necessary to distinguish between the facts which are in the course of investigation, and the fruits. It is up to you to think about them. I invite you to much discernment in the vocations, and in your sustained contact with your bishop and your provincial. But “go ahead’.”

He stated to me precisely the formula of private association of the faithful, provided by the new Code of Canon Law.

On the following day, September 10th, I obtained unexpectedly, an audience with the Holy Father. I summarised for him the essential, and the Pope anticipated my question in relation to this foundation with Medjugorje. He said:

“But, Father, what are you concerned about? This problem with Medjugorje... my services are concerned with it. Concern yourself with vocations and move ahead.

He spoke to me with emotion. He embraced me and said: “The Madonna will open all the ways.”

And as he gave me his rosary he said to me: “Pray also, for me.”

If I can get a chance over the weekend, I’ll transcribe the complete section on this. It is interesting to know that the visionary Marija and Our Lady had a hand in encouraging Fr Gianni in his mission.

Wow. I wonder if some kind of intervention is part of the Cardinals intention while in Medjugorje. Maybe Pope Benedict wants to see that community continue and will have Cardinal Schononborn (sp?) look into it when he's there.
God bless you!
